HMB and creatine: understand the ingredients and the combination
Explore leucine-derived HMB, the research behind it and the ingredient amounts in Applied Nutrition Creatine + HMB.

What is HMB?
HMB stands for beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate. It is a metabolite of leucine, one of the essential amino acids found in dietary protein. A metabolite is a substance formed when the body processes another substance.
The body naturally produces HMB from some of the leucine it uses. Supplemental HMB supplies the compound directly. It is different from taking a protein powder, an EAA supplement or leucine on its own.
HMB has been studied in relation to muscle protein turnover, strength, recovery and the maintenance of muscle in different populations.
Calcium HMB and free-acid HMB
The two main supplemental forms studied are calcium HMB (HMB-Ca) and free-acid HMB (HMB-FA). Their formulation and absorption characteristics differ, and research should be read with the form in mind.
A calcium HMB ingredient includes the calcium salt of HMB. When a label specifies its amount, retain that exact description rather than assuming it declares an identical weight of free HMB. The ingredient specification and serving information are the useful reference.
How is HMB different from creatine?
Ingredient
Main research focus
How to understand it
Creatine
Muscle phosphocreatine stores and repeated high-intensity performance.
Helps support the rapid regeneration of ATP during intense efforts.
HMB
Muscle protein synthesis and breakdown, strength and recovery in different settings.
A leucine-derived compound studied in muscle protein turnover.
ATP is a molecule cells use to transfer energy. Creatine helps replenish ATP during short, demanding efforts. It has a substantial body of research in sports nutrition.
HMB's research centres on protein turnover, the ongoing building and breaking down of proteins in muscle. “Anabolic” describes building processes; “anti-catabolic” describes reducing breakdown. Those terms explain the proposed biology, rather than guaranteeing a specific change in muscle size.
Research includes beginners, trained athletes, older adults and people exposed to muscle loss or demanding training. Results from one group do not automatically apply to another.
The ISSN position stand discusses potential roles for HMB in muscle protein synthesis and limiting breakdown, and reviews studies reporting benefits in selected circumstances. Evidence in healthy young people undertaking resistance training is less consistent: a 2020 systematic review did not find an added benefit for strength or fat-free mass across its analysed trials.
Some reviews in older adults have reported improvements in strength with HMB-containing interventions. These studies can involve different diets, exercise programmes and additional ingredients, which makes them different from testing a single gym supplement in experienced lifters.
The practical interpretation is to match the study population, formula and outcome to the claim. HMB remains a focused ingredient with context-dependent evidence, while progressive training, sufficient food and protein remain the foundation.
Why combine HMB and creatine?
The combination brings two research areas into one serving: creatine's role in repeated high-intensity performance and HMB's investigation in muscle protein turnover. A combined powder can also be convenient if these are ingredients you have chosen for your routine.
A systematic review of creatine-plus-HMB studies found some positive strength, anaerobic-performance and body-composition results, alongside outcomes that did not improve. The small, varied evidence base does not establish that combining them is always better than creatine alone.
Check the amount of each ingredient separately. A larger total serving does not tell you how much creatine or calcium HMB it contains.
The directions specify one 8g serving daily, mixed with approximately 200ml water, juice or a suitable shake. Use the supplied scoop according to the instructions. The unflavoured format is useful if you prefer to add it to a drink you already enjoy.
Creatine increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high-intensity exercise; the beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 3g creatine. This established creatine claim is separate from the developing evidence for HMB and the combined formula.
Follow the selected product's directions and account for overlapping ingredients. If your blend already contains creatine, add that to any creatine from other powders, capsules, pre-workouts or foods.
Studies commonly investigate HMB over repeated daily use. Taking it immediately before a session does not establish an instant strength boost. Research protocols also do not replace the directions on your finished product.
Seek individual advice if managing a health condition, taking medication, pregnant or breastfeeding. Older adults concerned about weakness or muscle loss should discuss the underlying issue with a qualified professional.
HMB FAQs
Is HMB the same as leucine?
No. HMB is formed from leucine during metabolism, but is a distinct compound. Protein foods, leucine and HMB supplements are different nutritional options.
Does HMB replace creatine?
No. They have different roles and evidence bases. Some products combine them for convenience.
Is calcium HMB the same as free-acid HMB?
They are different forms. Read the ingredient declaration and retain the form when comparing serving amounts or studies.
Do I need extra creatine with a combination formula?
Check the blend first. Applied Nutrition's labelled serving already provides 5g creatine monohydrate, so include that when reviewing your total.
