What is magnesium?
Magnesium is an essential mineral found in foods such as nuts, wholegrains and leafy green vegetables. It contributes to normal muscle and nervous-system function, energy metabolism and electrolyte balance.
Magnesium supplements pair the mineral with another substance to form a stable ingredient. Names such as glycinate, citrate and oxide identify that ingredient form. They are different ways of supplying the same mineral.
Magnesium glycinate, bisglycinate, citrate and oxide explained
Form
What the name means
What to check
Glycinate / bisglycinate
Magnesium associated with the amino acid glycine.
The elemental amount and the full ingredient specification.
Citrate
Magnesium combined with citric acid.
The serving amount, capsule or powder format and your tolerance.
Oxide
A compound of magnesium and oxygen.
The elemental amount and the finished formulation.
Multi-form blends
Two or more magnesium compounds in one formula.
Total elemental magnesium and any added nutrients.
Magnesium glycinate and bisglycinate
Magnesium bisglycinate describes magnesium bound to two glycine molecules. “Magnesium glycinate” is often used as a shorter name in supplement descriptions. Check the precise ingredient declaration rather than assuming every glycinate-labelled product has an identical composition.
You may also see the word chelated. This describes the way a mineral is bound to another molecule. A buffered glycinate ingredient may include another magnesium form, so the full specification is useful when comparing products.
Bisglycinate is a popular capsule option, including in PER4M Advanced Magnesium. Choose it around the actual elemental serving, formulation and your experience, rather than expecting a guaranteed effect on sleep or digestion.
Magnesium citrate
Citrate is used in capsules, powders and blends. Research generally finds it more readily absorbed than oxide, although absorption also depends on dose, formulation and individual circumstances. Tolerance can vary; increasing the amount is not always the best way to improve a routine.
Magnesium oxide
Oxide contains a relatively high proportion of magnesium by compound weight and is widely used in mineral formulas. It tends to have lower absorption than several more soluble forms, but that does not make every oxide-containing formula ineffective.
Consider the whole product: the elemental amount, any other forms included, the serving instructions and whether it suits you.
Magnesium blends, malate and taurate
Blends may combine glycinate or bisglycinate with citrate, oxide, malate or taurate. Malate refers to a form associated with malic acid; taurate refers to taurine.
A blend offers a combination of ingredients. More forms do not automatically establish better results, and each form does not need a separate claimed health benefit to explain its presence.
What does elemental magnesium mean?
Elemental magnesium is the magnesium itself, rather than the combined weight of magnesium and the substance attached to it. It is the useful figure when comparing how much mineral a serving supplies.
A large number describing a magnesium compound is not necessarily the elemental amount. For example, the label might list the compound first and then state “providing magnesium” separately. Read both lines and confirm whether they refer to one capsule or the full daily serving.
PER4M Advanced Magnesium Bisglycinate provides 300mg elemental magnesium per two capsules. That is the daily serving amount, rather than 300mg in each capsule. The 120-capsule bottle therefore provides 60 servings at the labelled use.
Magnesium formulas in our range
PER4M Advanced Magnesium
This formula uses magnesium bisglycinate in a straightforward capsule format. Its directions are two capsules daily with food. It suits a comparison focused on one magnesium form and a clearly stated elemental amount.
PER4M ZMA+
PER4M ZMA+ combines bisglycinate, citrate and oxide with zinc and vitamin B6. That makes it a different formula from a magnesium-only product. Check its total magnesium serving and account for the added nutrients if you already use a multivitamin or mineral supplement.
Evolution Supplements Triple Magnesium Complex
Our Triple Magnesium Complex combines malate, buffered glycinate and taurate with vitamin B6 and zinc. The listed three-capsule serving provides 387mg elemental magnesium; 2,453mg is the combined weight of the magnesium compounds. Check the product page for current availability and directions.
How to choose and use a magnesium supplement
Compare elemental magnesium per labelled daily serving.
Read the exact forms and any added zinc, B6 or other nutrients.
Consider capsule count, food sources and other supplements you use.
Follow the product's directions and choose a routine you can keep.
There is no established single best form for every person or purpose. Evidence for treating insomnia is less certain than magnesium's established nutritional roles, so avoid treating any form as a guaranteed sleep aid.
High supplemental amounts can cause diarrhoea or abdominal discomfort. Ask a pharmacist about timing if taking medicines such as certain antibiotics or osteoporosis treatments, since magnesium can affect their absorption. People with kidney disease should seek individual advice before supplementation.
Magnesium FAQs
Is bisglycinate the same as glycinate?
Bisglycinate is the more specific name for magnesium bound to two glycine molecules. Glycinate is commonly used as a shorter label, but ingredient specifications can differ.
Does 1,000mg of a magnesium compound mean 1,000mg magnesium?
No. Look for the declared elemental magnesium or “providing magnesium” figure. The compound also contains the associated substance.
Should I take magnesium before bed?
Follow the selected product's directions. An evening routine can be convenient, but it is not essential for every formula and does not guarantee better sleep.
Is a blend better than a single form?
It depends on the finished formula and your requirements. Compare elemental amounts, added nutrients, tolerance and convenience.
